What will the underground section change?
The new line will run beneath Donostia and provide a continuous rail connection between eastern and western Gipuzkoa. The new section includes three stations: Amara, Kontxa-Zentroa and Bentaberri. Test trains have already travelled from Lugaritz to the new underground Amara station, passing through Bentaberri and Kontxa-Zentroa. Driver training and finishing work at the stations and in nearby public spaces are among the final steps before the service opens.

This is separate from the Altza railway extension
The November opening concerns the underground line through central Donostia. It is separate from the Altza–Galtzaraborda extension and the new underground Pasai Antxo station, which entered service on 18 July 2026. That earlier project removed the dead end at Altza and has already allowed some services in the area to run more frequently.
