All About Jazzaldia: San Sebastian’s Legendary Jazz Festival
The San Sebastian Jazz Festival (widely known as Jazzaldia) is not just a key highlight of the international summer music calendar; it is a living testament to the history of jazz in Europe. Nestled in the breathtaking coastal city of San Sebastian (Donostia), this is the oldest jazz festival in Spain and one of the longest-running on the continent. Spanning more than half a century, Jazzaldia has welcomed absolute legends of music while offering an extraordinarily democratic setup where free beachside concerts run alongside exclusive historic venues.
A Rich History Dating Back to 1966
It all began on September 10, 1966. Inspired by a Count Basie concert in Paris, local enthusiast Imanol Olaizola envisioned a world-class jazz stage in San Sebastian. The gorgeous, atmospheric Plaza de la Trinidad in the Old Town was chosen as the starting point, revered to this day for its unparalleled acoustics. By the 1970s, legendary figures like Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, and B.B. King were gracing its stages, instantly transforming the Basque coast into a worldwide jazz haven.
Unmatched Cultural & Tourist Impact
Drawing well over 150,000 visitors annually, Jazzaldia transforms San Sebastian into a giant, pulsating music venue for five unforgettable days. What truly makes this festival unique is its integration with the city’s geography. You can experience world-class piano sets in a quiet Renaissance cloister in the morning, grab some of the world’s best Basque tapas (pintxos) in the Old Town, head to a seated show in a modern auditorium by sunset, and finish the night dancing barefoot on Zurriola Beach alongside tens of thousands of music lovers under the stars.
