Behobia San Sebastián 2024: News and Updates of the 59th Edition
The Behobia San Sebastián, one of the most iconic races on the Spanish athletic scene, will celebrate its 59th edition on Sunday, November 10, 2024. This year, the competition presents several new features and adjustments that reflect its constant evolution and adaptation to current circumstances. Below are the latest updates and highlights of this year’s edition.
Participation and Key Figures
The 2024 edition of the Behobia San Sebastián will feature 27,700 runners, a slightly lower figure compared to previous editions due to logistical and organizational adjustments. However, there is a notable increase in the registration of runners from Navarra, reaching a total of 1,358 participants from this autonomous community. This increase reflects the growing interest and commitment of people from Navarra to the race, strengthening the presence of athletes from different regions at the event. The geographical diversity of participants enriches the competition and strengthens ties between autonomous communities, making Behobia-San Sebastián a meeting point for runners from all over the country.
Route Modifications
One of the most significant changes to this Behobia San Sebastián is the modification of the traditional route. Due to the construction of the High-Speed Train (TAV) in Irún, specifically in the Ventas neighborhood, the bridge located on Elizatxo Avenue has been demolished. As a result, the race will be diverted approximately 220 meters along Letxunborro Avenue, increasing the total distance to 20.22 kilometers, making this edition of the Behobia San Sebastián the longest to date. This detour will remain in place for at least two years, until the bridge is rebuilt for pedestrian use. The organization has worked diligently to ensure that this change does not affect the runners’ experience, implementing measures to guarantee the safety and smooth flow of the new route. Additionally, extra signage has been installed, and the presence of volunteers has been reinforced at critical points along the route to guide participants and prevent confusion during the race.
Scientific and Health Initiatives
In the field of health and sports performance, Biogipuzkoa, in collaboration with the Fortuna Sports Club, has launched a study to analyze the relationship between runners’ performance and their health. This research is based on data provided by the participants, with the goal of obtaining valuable information that can help improve the preparation and well-being of athletes in future editions. Runners who wish to participate in the study can do so voluntarily, providing information about their physical condition, training habits, and race performance. The results of this research will allow the organizers to implement more effective strategies to support the health and performance of participants in future editions. Additionally, it is hoped that the findings will contribute to scientific knowledge about the relationship between physical activity and health, benefiting the sports community in general.
Solidarity with Runners Affected by the DANA in Valencia
The organization of the Behobia San Sebastián has shown solidarity with runners from the Valencian Community affected by the recent floods caused by the Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA). These participants have been offered the option to receive a full registration refund or to reserve their race bib for the 2025 edition, acknowledging the difficulties they face and demonstrating empathy in times of adversity. This initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to the running community and its sensitivity to exceptional situations that may affect athletes’ participation. Additionally, direct communication channels have been established so that affected runners can manage their requests quickly and efficiently, ensuring a prompt response to their needs. The solidarity shown on this occasion strengthens the sense of community and mutual support that characterizes the Behobia San Sebastián.
Official Presentation of the Race Shirt
The official shirt of the 59th edition of the Behobia San Sebastián has been unveiled, featuring a design with white and yellow stripes, made by Luanvi, the official race sponsor. This garment will be distributed to the 27,000 participants during the race expo, symbolizing the spirit and identity of the event. The shirt design has been carefully crafted to combine functionality and aesthetics, using high-quality materials that offer comfort and breathability during the race. Additionally, quick-drying technology has been incorporated to keep runners cool and dry throughout the route. The choice of colors and striped pattern pays tribute to the tradition of Behobia-San Sebastián, while adding a modern and vibrant touch that reflects the energy and enthusiasm of the participants. The shirt’s presentation has generated a positive response among runners, many of whom have expressed their satisfaction with the design and quality of the garment.
Parallel Events: Behobia Txiki
As is tradition since 2007, the Behobia Txiki will take place at the Anoeta Mini Stadium, aimed at children aged 4 to 13. This parallel event seeks to promote sports and participation from a young age, involving families in the sporting festivities that Behobia-San Sebastián represents. The Behobia Txiki offers different categories and distances tailored to various ages, allowing the little ones to enjoy the race experience in a safe and controlled environment. Additionally, fun and educational activities have been organized to complement the event, promoting values such as teamwork and sportsmanship.
